A Bend in the River

As the Mississippi River flows south it bends and turns. At Red Wing, it flows around a wide corner and down into Lake Pepin. Fun fact: Laura Ingalls Wilder was born in Pepin, Wisconsin and in her books she and other members of her family visit Lake Pepin. In one book they cross the frozen lake in a covered wagon.

However, yesterday was a beautiful summer day and we had a great view of the river and surrounding countryside from the top of a bluff.

Downtown Red Wing is full of sculptures and interesting old buildings.

Happy Labor Day!!

  1. I drove down the west side of the Mississippi just last week for the first time in over 10 years. It brought back a flood of memories.Tim and his sister Becky attended St. Mary’s in Winona for their BA’s with a year overlap. I thought of going to St. Mary’s, but I didn’t think I could take it emotionally.

There’s a wonderful sculpture there in front of the fine arts building that I love called “Circle of Life” that gets me teary eyed whenever look at it. If you get the chance it’s well worthwhile to drive to Winona on 61 and then return on 35 on the Wisconsin side. So many cool little river towns! Fountain City has the Rock in The House attraction where a 55 ton rock rolled from the bluff above and into someones living room.
