Naniboujou Lodge

Naniboujou Lodge is located just north of Grand Marais, Minnesota, on the north shore of Lake Superior. It originally opened in July of 1929 as a very exclusive expensive private club. Only the elite were allowed to join. Babe Ruth and Jack Dempsey were noted original members. However in October of 1929 the stock market crashed and so did the Naniboujou.

The lodge changed hands several times over the years mainly serving as a hotel and then in the 1980’s it was sold to Tim and Nancy Ramey. They began remodeling it and preserving it. The original fireplace is the largest in Minnesota. It was built by a local man named Carlson using 200 tons of native rock and stands twenty feet high. The paintings on the walls and ceiling of the dining room were originally painted by a French artist, Antoine Goufee. The paintings are of Cree Indian designs. The Rameys hired Susan Christopherson to expand the paintings throughout the lodge reproducing the original colors. The lodge is now on the National Register of Historical Places.

It is open to the public from May to October and hosts special groups and retreats in the off season. The Ramey family still own and manage the lodge.
